Charitable Organizations
The Media-Upper Providence Free Library Book Sale supports many charitable organizations in our surrounding area. Most of these organizations serve underserved children who aren’t part of the Title I school districts the book sale supports through the Fisher Foundation Grant.
Our Impact
Here is a list of organizations that gathered books during recent sales. We estimate that over 2,000 books were gathered and will now go into the hands of children and support their growth as readers:
- St. Christophers Hospital for Children in Philadelphia – a retired teacher who works with St. Christophers in Philadelphia gathered books to be given at children’s doctor visits.
- Teachers Teammates – a group of retired teachers who support Title I teachers gathered books to put in schools they serve, many in William Penn School District.
- Art Goes to School – books were obtained for the training of volunteers who share fine art in classrooms.
- Books Behind Bars – volunteers gathered an assortment of books for this program.
- Laundromat Library – a group of volunteers gathered books that will be placed in laundromats for children to read while their parents wash clothes.
- Residential borrowing library – a resident of the Mayfair section of Philadelphia gathered books for her borrowing library in front of her house. Children will be able to borrow books as they go back and forth to school.
- Mitchell Elementary School in Philadelphia – a group of retired teachers who volunteer at Mitchell Elementary School gathered books for classrooms.
- High Schools in Philadelphia – two teachers gathered books to start libraries in their respective schools. Another teacher collected books for a self-selected reading program.
